For those who are downloading Free or Premium Magento Themes often find themselves in a confused state over how to proceed and edit the template files to make the theme compatible with their own requirements. Well, if you know Magento template architecture and have ample knowledge of HTML/CSS you can change the Magento template (you’ve downloaded) by yourself without the need of a developer.
Basic requirements boils down to few necessary changes i.e.
- Change Site Logo & Tagline (if any)
- Change Footer Links
- Add Products (Obvious) and show in frontend (especially if your theme displays random, top or bestsellers on front page)
Lets go through each of the points one by one. First lets figure out how to change the site logo. You will notice that on “header.phtml” file which typically contains a call to header logo has the following line of code
In the above line you will notice that a call to $this->get LogoSrc(); function fills the logo path and shows site logo in header.phtml file. You will find the logo path under System>Configuration>Design and scroll down to Header>Logo Image Src. Now, you have to provide the path of the image file which you will typically store in this path.
Another option is the go to the
/skin/frontend/default/your_theme/images/ and replace the old logo file with your new logo.
Changing footer links is relatively easy, all you have to do is open app/design/frontend/default/your_theme/template/page/html/footer.phtml and put in your desired cotents/links in HTML format.
Adding products on home page
There are various Magento extensions available which can help you setup your home page properly. You can display featured products, best selling products or some random products on your store’s home page.
